Forum: feature_films Subject: Are these movies and tv shows public domain

I found a website that has alot of old movies and tv shows for download.

Here are just a few.

Tv shows

Sanford and Son - 1976
Space 1999 - 1975

Movies

Corvette Summer - 1978
Kiss meets the phantom of the park - 1978

I checked on copyright.gov and they seem to be public domain. Didn't see a renewal for any of them, but I'm new at this and would like a second opinion.

Thanks

The website is stagevu.com. Don't know where they are actually located. They have lots of movies and tv shows all in .avi format and high quality, and they don't make you sign up for anything and you don't have to download any programs to watch or download the movies.

Just because a movie is big budget doesn't mean that it can't be public domain. McClintock is big budget and its in the public domain.

I didn't realize Space 1999 is from the U.K. I think they have a 50 years wait before a broadcast show goes into the Public Domain.

Corvette Summer does not show any renewal and I think thats how everybody determines copyright status. If you know of another way to verify, please let me know.

Also found Rock and Roll High School with the Ramones there.

Thanks for any help.

Stagevu seems to be similar to YouTube, Veoh and a couple of other member-driven sites that allow uploads and will host videos until someone makes a copyright infringement claim.

They have quite a few recent movies posted there -- movies that are definitely still under copyright: 2012, Public Enemies, Zombieland, District 9, etc.

These are full movies, not clips or trailers.

You gotta love their disclaimer

"Stagevu respects the rights of content distributors and replies promptly to any requests for the removal of copyrighted content, as required by the DMCA. In the case that you find any unauthorized content on Stagevu, and are the rights holder or a representative, please contact us with the URLs of the video pages."

and

"Copyrighted works are strictly forbidden, and will be removed when the copyright holder assents to its removal. You may contact us if (and only if) you believe the work was mistakenly identified."

Pretty lame.

My advice: Enjoy the site and its videos while you can. They're leaving themselves wide open for lawsuits.

I went to copyright.gov and copied the info. below.

So what do you think, are they public domain? The copyright renewal would be located right underneath the registration date but none is recorded on any of them.

I also include a link to a .pdf file that explains Motion Picture copyright law in plain language for anybody who would like info. on this subject.

Films produced after 1977 do not require renewal. There is a summary of copyright terms that might be useful at

Thanks for the info on the website. Not real useful for PD, but I'm gonna download a few for personal use before they get sued off the net.

A legit DVD of ROCK N ROLL HIGH SCHOOL is due out this year; if you can wait a few months I'm sure it will be worth it:

Where's that website run from, a ship outside the 12-mile limit? :)
Seriously, I doubt if there's any way these could be PD. Sanford and Son is based on Steptoe and Son, so the underlying rights would be British. Space: 1999 was made in the UK, and is no doubt copyrighted there. Corvette Summer was way too big-budget to have slipped through the cracks. The KISS movie used to be offered on some PD collections, but that was before the laws were changed and it probably got renewed afterwards.
And if you're American, you should know better than to trust the government! :)
